I recently had the privilege of taking an impromptu trip to Montreal. I boarded a mega bus and arrived one summer afternoon at the gross Montreal bus station. As I walked to my inn I walked past a building that was still under construction. From the top of the building water was dripping at intervals. Creating pools of awful smelling water. It had not rained in days, so I only have my imagination to determine where the gross water came from. It was at this moment that I decided to spend less time on the Montreal sidewalks. BIXI bikes was the answer.

I had seen a few BIXI stands in Toronto and have a hazy memory of riding a BIXI in Washington DC the morning after my birthday. What I did not know until I reached Montreal is that Montreal is saturated with BIXI bikes. They are everywhere you could want to be. BIXI stands are down every side street, just around the corner from any busy intersection. They surround malls and mark the entrance to parks. There are over 5000 BIXI bicycles in Montreal. Five thousand!

I slid my credit card into a BIXI machine, got my secret code to unlock a bike and rode off. Here is how it works: you let a machine scan your credit card which gets you a secret code to unlock the bike of your choosing. Once you have a bike you can return it to any other BIXI stand. You can also get any other bike from any other stand with the same credit card. At the end of 24 hours your credit card gets billed for the time you actually had a bicycle out of the stands. Seems fair to me. Generally I was never hanging around with a bike; I would go where I wanted and put the bicycle back in the stand while I did my doing. Once I finished my coffee or beer or sunbathing in the park I grabbed another bike and went to my next destination.

These bicycles are used a lot. Everywhere you look there is someone on a BIXI bike. At night on many streets you can see the flashing headlights running off the generator. They have to be robust. Especially in Montreal traffic (I saw more than one person stop at a red light and then run it or just ignore it completely). They have to be tough and they are. They have a heavy metal frame, completely enclosed drum brakes, enclosed planetary gears (three speed), LED lights running off a generator, stiff metal handlebar basket. Being this tough has some costs though. There is a button on the stands that allow you to mark a bicycle as needing repairs. I found this button first when I took out a bicycle with a flat rear tire. That would seem to be about the only thing that can easily be broken on the bikes. The brakes however can become less than effective. The drum breaks must wear down or get infiltrated with dirt as some of them required an immense amount of pressure to stop the bike (even worse due to the weight of the frame).

Another growing pain of BIXI appears to be the scalability of their computer systems. You cannot take more than one bicycle out at a time. When you return the bike to a stand it updates a computer system somewhere saying you have returned the bike and are now allowed to take out another one. During the height of the afternoon this took more  over an hour to notify the system that I had return a bike. I had returned it to take a different one because the brakes did not work. I called their support number and they admitted that the system gets extremely slow and they could not even check it out because it was too slow for them to login. This could probably be solved with a little better IT support.

These issues are just from the popularity of the bikes. If they were not used so damn much they would not be worn or slow updating your rental status. Despite being used so much I never encountered a BIXI stand that was completely empty or one that was too full to return a bicycle. I cannot even remember the pricing scheme, but I ended up only paying $6.50 while going back and forth all day -- seems like I paid too little.

Sun, 20 Feb 2011 22:59:00 -0800 Wavelength Eleventh Anniversary Festival http://deadtreepages.com/wavelength-eleventh-anniversary-festival http://deadtreepages.com/wavelength-eleventh-anniversary-festival

I had never heard of Wavelength until I actually showed up to one of the shows that is currently going on for their 11th anniversary. I was invited by a friend that has a friend in one of the bands playing the show, so I decided to make an appearance. After hearing about Wavelength at the show I looked them up. Wavelength is a hard to pin down. It is an organization that does a lot of underground music promotion. They have (not sure if they still do?) put out a zine for new happening artists and organize shows featuring those artists. I must say this show I went to was fucking awesome. It was one of a series of events that are happening for their 11th anniversary festival; this one being at the Great Hall on Queen st on February 19th.

I had never been in the Great Hall until last night at the show. It is a big old stone building that has some huge concert hall/theatre type rooms. The setup was in a hall with high ceilings a theatre-type stage (deep wings etc) and had a thin balcony all the way around where some tech dudes manned the lights and sound system -- it was the perfect location for this. The lighting was very well done. They had a bunch of spirograph type spinning stained glass plates in front of lights that project very cool images onto the backdrop as well as the standard stage lights that can change colour and such. Nothing crazy expensive, but effective at creating a fitting atmosphere. I should mention there was a properly provisioned (millstreet and some okay liquor) bar in the back corner as well. I will definately be see more things at this venue.

At first I thought the show might not be that great. A strange looking man in a red shirt (apparently the announcer) got up and told a story about a bear eating a beaver and everyone that beaver loved. He said he was setting the bar low so that we would really enjoy the  show coming up and he was right -- the bar was set extremely low. Between the acts red shirt guy would come back up and ramble meaninglessly. I thought he was blitzed on drugs, but as he started singing about computers while a band tried in vain to do a sound check on the mics I realized that he was probably brain damaged. When he started talking about passing out on mountains and ignoring the crowds pleads for him to stop talking it was apparent that it was probably a combination of drugs and brain damage (caused by drugs?). As the night progressed he just got worse and the crowds would yell at him to shut up as soon as he got on stage. There was especially no way to feel sympathy for him after he made fun of people with AIDS.

The first performer up was Grimes. And she was amazing. She was alone on the stage with a mic, a keyboard, and a mixing deal. She sang hauntingly beautiful melodies along with tracks that she would switch up. The result was an awesome blend of looped vocals (which she did on the spot), solid backing tracks, and herself singing along overtop. It worked out wonderfully. There was a couple hiccups and coughs (she had a cold), but everything she got right was perfect. Unfortunately she did not have an album for sale on the merch table, but I am hoping to see if she has one I can purchase and listen to incessantly.

The next band had a boring name and I have forgotten it. They also had a boring lead guitarist/singer that wanked their entire set. He must have recently purchased a wah pedal and thought "this pedal was expensive; I better use it ALL THE TIME to get my money's worth." He attempted solos for most of most songs that were driven by hitch-pitched wahs influenced with a whammy bar he didn't know how to use. The band was introduced as a trio, but they had four players: the lead guitarist/singer, a percussionist that played a drumkit with no bass drum, a percussionist that played the bass drum and maracas, and the bassist. The bassist was rather talented. The percussionist on the maracas was the happiest guy that night. He just kept smiling a huge smile, eyes closed, shakin the maracas in his right hand and hitting a bongo drum with whatever he had in his left hand (rotating through a string of bells, a stick, a small symbol, and maybe some other ones I missed). He was just happy to be there.

The third act was Little Girls and they were loud. They played some heavy rock with psychadelic tendencies. A custom programmed visualizer ran on the backdrop that was mostly lines that were affected by the instruments and old videos that were often a little creepy. They reminded me of noise punk, but without the punk. Very talented bunch, but I think the acoustics or setup were not ideal for their style; I couldn't really hear the vocals. The drummer of this band was absolutely great. I don't really have that much to say about them. They were a solid act and I bought their record on vinyl after the show.

Maylee Todd was the fourth act. They are fucking amazing. Ridiculously awesome. Unbelievable. I can't believe how good they are. I just... I don't even know how to describe it. Wow. At one point a soul train started on the floor. Mad powerful vocals (she also played killer harp) backed up by some very skilled musicians (and backup vocals). All around an amazing group.

I missed the final band because the red-shirt guy started raving again (it was unbearable!) and there was no way they could top Maylee Todd (sorry final band!).

In the end, this show of the eleventh annual Wavelength festival was great. It had its low points, but the high points were so far out that nothing else mattered. I am super excited that I got to see it.

Fri, 24 Apr 2009 04:48:00 -0700 Fast & Furious Review http://deadtreepages.com/fast-furious-review http://deadtreepages.com/fast-furious-review

Media_httpreadinknetw_dicgo
For my first movie review I chose something with a very simple plot. Something that is so blatantly laid out that it will be easy for people to understand my review. This is especially important because I did not watch the entire movie. I was passing in and out of sleep during the film and I haven't seen the three prequels to Fast & Furious. I have seen other Vin Diesel movies; and they are pretty much all related to each other. Dominic, Richard, and Xander are the same character in emotion, facial expressions, personality, and hair length. In this particular film Vin Diesel's goal is to kill Mr T. Apparently Mr T killed Vin's latina lover; Vin finds this out through a flashback very early in the film. This isn't a true flashback of course, because Vin  was in Mexico hiding from the law when it happened. A drug induced hallucination is more likely the reason he thinks Mr T killed her. From this quick description you can infer what the rest of the plot is; the standard vengeance story. What you won't be able to figure out is why the FBI never think to check Vin's sisters (his only family) house to see if he is visiting during the funeral. Did I mention that his sister in this film is Hispanic -- for those of you unfamiliar Vin Diesel is mighty white. There are several other points that you have to avoid thinking too hard about, but we can leave plot holes in the background of an action movie.
Media_httpreadinknetw_jwyai
As expected there are many fast car chase action sequences. Unfortunately they are usually more car then chase. All the camera shots are closeups of the cars body and rarely does it pan out enough to see a road underneath. I have a notion that the car is just sitting there -- with Vin making car noises inside. The action sequences may be hazardous to people with epilepsy as they flicker incessantly due to the scene being cut every few seconds. I would like to attribute this to bad camera work, but I have a suspicion that Vin could not get through more than three words before fucking something up -- two words if one of them is over three syllables. Putting the awful story, plot holes, implausible story lines, predictable speaking lines, poor camera work, and horrendous acting aside this was still a terrible movie. Don't watch it -- ever.
